Subject: Sassi & Gringo
Sassi & Gringo celebrated their Engagement by going to this concert !
When we entered the Theater we were quite impressed by the setup on stage : Very colorful curtains in the background gave a nice atmosphere to the room. We also appreciated very much that it was a non smoking event!

The crowd of young and old Deadheads were on their feet and dancing in the aisles as soon as the band walked onto stage. When we closed our eyes we believed to hear Bob Weir or Jerry Garcia sing and Jerry noodle his typical melodic solos. Everyone agreed on that the roles of Bobby and Jerry were played excellent - especially the guitar solos. An honorable mention should be given to the organ player for keeping everyone dancing and on their feet too!

By the set break everyone was trying to guess which Dead show the band had picked to play that night. Most favored was a date from the early 80s but it turned out to be 12/27/79! Exactly 23 years ago! An excellent choice by the band. We loved every minute of it! The concert ended at the midnight hour but the crowd definitely wanted to stay longer and cheered the band on for more encores. They didnt let us wait too long and everyone enjoyed a girl playing Donna Godcheaux and dancing and singing for the last song. Sassi and Gringo will always remember a wonderful concert !!!

Notes

Performing 12/27/1979 Oakland Auditorium, Oakland, CA

*with Lisa

Notes: All the original master DATs suffered from a source glitch; the XLR left channel inputs were problematic leaving one-sided drop outs and digi-noise on the first two tracks. Situation Pete was off doing other things when the band hit the stage so the tapes don't start until the "hurts my ears to listen" line in Jack Straw. I was able to fix most problems with Cool Edit 1.2 but some short diginoise remains in Jack Straw and at the end of Deal.

First I took the Jack Straw from the 10-11-02 show and used the first minute (splice at 00:56) as a patch. There is 1 second of diginoise at 1:04. At 2:50 I lifted 41 seconds of the Right channel and replaced the Left with it to get rid of dropouts and diginoise. at 3:46 and 4:05 I removed small sectioons of solo to remove major diginoise. At 5:20 I lifted the Right channel again till the end of the track

Next I took TLEO and lifted the Right track for the first 1:25. From 2:18 - 2:22 and 4:41 - 4:50 I had two-channel dropouts which had to be patched using the TLEO from 12-29-02.

On Deal I used Cool Edit Click and Pop eliminator to bring down the diginoise spike at the final crescendo. Some diginoise still remains.

Finally, Black Peter suffered from dropouts throughout the song until into the solo. I lifted the Right channel and replaced the left for this whole section.
